Hey,
I’m writing today’s post by dictating it to ChatGPT because my computer thought I should be in vacation mode. Even though I entered the password correctly about 20 times, I got completely locked out. So, no keyboard today.
What I wanted to talk about is changing your mind – changing your opinion, your beliefs, your decisions. That it’s okay to change.
This topic came up when I was sending a photo of a cow to my friend Becca, who told me she’d heard what was presented as a Polish expression: “I can change my mind. I’m not a cow.”
And this brought these thoughts about changing my mind back to me. I think it’s a good thought to think.
If you thought about something one way at some point in time, you might easily think about it another way today. And if you think about it, if everything stays the same, maybe you’re staying in the same place. Maybe you want that, maybe you don’t. Probably you don’t 🙃
When I finally realised a few years ago that it’s okay to change my mind about a decision, to make a new decision, to say, “Okay, a few years ago (or judt a week ago) I thought about it like this, but now I have more experience, I have different knowledge, and I think differently,” it was quite freeing. I’d probably done with a distant, or acute, feeling of guilt earlier. Now it seemed completely legitimate.
I had already learned not to judge anyone if I hadn’t been in the exact same situation. Or actually just not to judge anyone at all (with exceptions!), because you never know what’s behind everything.
This is more about my own opinions and beliefs about myself and what I’m doing.
We often tend to think that once we have an opinion about something, we need to stick to it. To stand our ground. And yes, it can be confusing if you keep changing your opinion a lot. Probably you’d lose credibility. But if things have genuinely changed and you have a different opinion now, just explain why. Make it visible. Make it transparent. I’d way you’ve done all you can. If others don’t buy it, well.. it’s them then.
So, I’ve had a new experience today, dictating the newsletter to ChatGPT. With some editing and not much research (except for finding out if there actually is an established expression including cows and changing one’s mind), it took about 40 minutes. Less than the usual. But speaking a newsletter is quite a different experience from writing one.
And I love writing ☺️
I hope you’ll have a chance to try something new yourself.
See you next week.
